Nigeria is blessed with over 100 mineral resources/commodities discovered in several Nigerian States in commercial quantities. Here we shall be displaying the images of mineral resources/commodities discovered in commercial quantities from two states, one from the southern part of the country and the second one from the northern part of the country.
The others are found in the brochure for the conference. Southern Region Cross River Cross River State is one of the states in the South-South Geopolitcal Zone.
The state was formerly part of the then Eastern Region with Akwaibom as one state in 1967. In 1987 Akwaibom State got divided from the state to form a new state.
Important Dates in the History of Cross River State 1967 – Cross River was part of Eastern Region. 1976 – Became part of newly formed South Eastern States. 1987 – Got broken off from one of its part which went to form a new state called Akwaibom State.The capital of Cross River State is Calabar with 18 LGA’s in total.
Borders to Cross River On the North – Benue State. On the West – Ebonyi & Abia States. On the South – Akwaibom State.
The eastern border of Cross River state borders with Cameroon. The Area of Cross River State is in excess of 2000km2 with a 2006 census population figure of 3,737, 517. The GDP of the state is $15, 56 Billion Dollars with per capital income of $ 5,150 Dollars. Northern Region Kogi State Kogi State is one of the North Central States in Nigeria. The State is blessed with 3 Major ethnic majorities in the state, the Igalas, the Okenes, and the Okuns which is the Yoruba speaking area of Kogi State.
Kogi is an Housa word for River, it is therefore called Rivers State except that it is pronounced in Housa language. Kogi State is one of the few states that borders as many as ten other states making it one of the largest States in Nigeria.
Kogi State Borders On the West – By Ekiti and Kwara On the North – By the Federal Capital Territory On the North East – Nasarawa State On the North West- Niger State On the South West- By Edo and Ondo On the South East- By Anambra and Enugu On the East- Benue State Kogi State is formed by a combination of some parts of Benue, Kwara and Niger States.
The solid mineral commodities found in commercial quantities in Kogi State includes but not limited to Clay, Iron Ore, Gemstone, Marble, Felspar, Dolomite, Phosphate, Mica, Granite, Ornamental Stone, Coal, Limestone, Tin, Crude Oil and Natural Gas. As a result of the large deposits of Iron Ore discovered in the State as well as Limestone, the federal government set up a very large factory called Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited in the early 80’s to manufacture steel from Iron Ore which is the raw material required for it and also Dangote Group of Companies built one of the largest cement factories to manufacture cement from the large deposits of limestone in Kogi State.
Kogi State has a total area of 29,833km2 with a 2006 Census Population of 3,314,043. The State has 2021 GDP of $23.88 Billion Dollars with a per capital income of $4,593. Some important dates in the history of Kogi State include: 1800s – The parts of the State were still split to other States/Regions.
1900s-1903 – British seized the area and incorporated it into the Northern Nigeria Protectorate with the then capital situated at Lokoja till 1903. 1960 – Becomes part of the independent Nigeria and part of Northern Region.
1967 – It was split to become part of North Western State with Kwara,Benue and Plateau States. 1991 – It then became free from Benue and others to become an independent State.
Other ethnic nationalities in Kogi State includes Igala, Ebira, Gbagyi, Nupe, Bassa Nge, Kakanda, Agatu, Basu- komo, Ogori Okun, Oworo and Magongo.
